Skill, speed, and stamina are the three S’s that mark the world’s most exciting automobile race - the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Roughly 46 cars start the race, in a series of classes that include prototype high-performance vehicles, dedicated race cars, and streetcars. The diversity of autos gives the race a mixture of old-fashioned and modern competitors. The winner is the car, driven by a team of three drivers, that covers a fascinating distance in 24 hours. The first Le Mans contest happened in May 1923; today, every year it is organized in June. The race begins at 4 p.m., and for 24 hours the sound of roaring engines fills 8 miles (13 kilometers) of the French countryside. It is one of the three races of Triple Crown of Motorsport, following Indianapolis 500 and Monaco Grand Prix. Obviously, the car that will go through the maximum amount of miles in those 24 hours, wins the race. It is known to be quite hard to drive a car for this amount of time, even for three people.
