The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is New Zealand's premier and largest annual cycling occasion with both on and off-road event categories offered. First held in 1977, it takes place on the last Saturday of each November and circumnavigates Lake Taupo, a volcanic crater lake in the center of the North Island. The ride starts and finishes in Taupo with one full circle being approximately 160 km. Around 6,000 riders take part each year. Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge adheres to the philosophy of inclusion and offers a variety of different styles such as road and mountain bike events, elite races, family rides as well as team and group challenges that any person regardless of their age, level of cycling or physical abilities can take part in.
